Fishing

Thanks to the marine reserve surrounding Kapiti Island, there has been a huge increase in the amount of fish in the waters around the Kapiti Coast. All you need is the right gear, to know the right spots and currents, and then you will have access to New Zealand Tarakihi, Blue Cod, Kahawai, Trevally and Groper. Snapper are also common in season, as are Kingfish. If you don't have a boat, plenty of fishers are successful catching Kahawai when towing a line behind a kayak, or try surf casting from the beach.

Between Waikanae and Paraparaumu you will find the Waikanae River mouth. This is a popular spot for in-season white baiters. Here you can also fish the river for sea-run brown trout, and further up the river is great fly fishing for large browns hiding on the river edges.

The upper reaches of the Otaki River are lined with native bush and here you will also find the odd trout, though the majority of trout are found in the lower areas of this river.

2. Beaches

Kapiti has many beautiful beaches to visit. All of the beaches on this coastline have stunning views out to Kapiti Island, a pest free wildlife reserve for over 100 years. Places such as Raumati Beach village, located in the heart of Kapiti, provide a lifestyle of shopping, biking, walking, fishing, bush tracks and surfing.

Other beaches include Waikanae, a 5 kilometre long beach with a wide river mouth. The waters from the beach to Kapiti Island are a marine reserve, and sometimes you can spot whales on their way migrating north. Paraparaumu, the main centre of Kapiti, has scenic beaches that provide safe swimming and opportunity for most water sports.

All of these beaches have esplanades and reserves with parks and picnic spots.

3. Wellington

If the beaches and fishing aren't enough to keep you entertained, then Wellington City is only a short commute by train, bus or car. Here in New Zealand's culture capital you will find all variety of entertainment, from concerts to sporting events to annual festivals and even world movie premiers. Of course you also have access to fantastic shopping and cafes, bars and restaurants.

Many of the Kapiti Coast's residents are employed in the city, and they commute to jobs in Wellington via the Tranz Metro electric commuter trains that run along a portion of the North Island Main Trunk Railway. This is referred to as the Kapiti Line. The train is also a great way to travel with the family on the weekends, avoiding city traffic and parking.

From sea fishing to fresh water fishing, going to the beach, visiting Kapiti Island, and heading to the city - the Kapiti Coast has so many things to offer. As a great place to live and raise a family why not consider it as a place to build your new home.
